Direzione Investigativa Antimafia
The Direzione Investigativa Antimafia (DIA) is a national Italian criminal investigation agency for the fight against the Mafia and other similar forms of organized crime . The DIA is subordinate to the Italian Ministry of the Interior in Rome .

The staff comes almost exclusively from the Polizia di Stato ( Police ), the Carabinieri and the Guardia di Finanza .
The headquarters in Rome includes:
- three operational departments: I information gathering and evaluation, II police investigations, III international relations and
- central administrative departments.
There are also twelve regional DIA offices throughout Italy, some of which have branch offices. You will work with the central departments in Rome and other police forces in Italy and abroad.
In investigative and criminal proceedings, the activities of the DIA are coordinated by special anti-mafia public prosecutors ( Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia - DDA ), which are usually attached to the public prosecutor's offices at the appellate courts and the National Anti-Mafia Public Prosecutor's Office ( Direzione Nazionale Antimafia - DNA ) at the Court of Cassation are subject to.
The DIA is not a secret service . For intelligence activities, including organized crime, Italy has the domestic intelligence service Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Interna (AISI), which reports to the Prime Minister but provides the Ministry of Interior directly with relevant information. The DIA was created in 1992 by law No. 410 of December 30, 1991 from the “High Commissioner for Combating Mafia”. The examining magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino , murdered by the Mafia in Palermo in 1992 , who considered the former High Commissioner to be inadequate, are considered to be the fathers of the DIA and the special anti- mafia public prosecutor's offices (DNA / DDA).
