ASASSN-15lh (SN 2015L; ASASSN: All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae ) is a supernova in the galaxy APMUKS (BJ) B215839 discovered on June 14, 2015 by the telescopes of Cerro Tololo in Chile , 3.8 billion light years away . 70-615403.9 . The great distance and the extreme brightness of the supernova confirmed further observations and investigations by the Southern African Large Telescope and the Swift satellite . Follow-up observations are planned with the Hubble space telescope , among others .

ASASSN-15lh shone as brightly as 570 billion suns , surpassing the previous record holder SN 2007bi . According to earthsky , it was more than twice as bright as this one. It was also hotter than any comparable event known to date. It therefore belongs to the class of so-called overly bright supernovae , the explosion mechanism and energy source of which are controversially discussed, as all known theories reach their limits when explaining the immense amount of energy emitted. As one of the possible explanations, the researchers suspect a magnetar in the center of the explosion, as its magnetic field could strengthen it. But this Magnetar scenario still cannot fully explain what happened. It is also conceivable that a gigantic giant star with a mass that was previously not thought possible would have exploded.

In the meantime, however, an alternative scenario is considered to be the trigger for this luminous phenomenon: It is assumed that a sun-like star was torn ( spaghetti ) and swallowed by the central, super-massive black hole .
