SN 2007bi is a supernova discovered on April 6, 2007 by the Nearby Supernova Factory at Berkeley Lab . This is the first confirmed pair instability supernova . It is located in the dwarf galaxy SDSS J131920.14 + 085543.7 (also called Anon J131920 + 0855 ) in the constellation Virgo, about 1.7 billion light years away .
The mass of the predecessor star was approx. 200 M ☉ at the time of the explosion , the mass of the core - consisting of helium - was approx. 100 M ☉ . The explosion generated an estimated 7 M ☉ of the nickel isotope 56 Ni.
