2016 presidential election results in the United States
This page lists the results of the 2016 presidential primaries for the United States .
Delegates
The delegates of a state were divided among the respective candidates based on the results in the primaries. The delegates elected their party's presidential candidate at national party conventions .
The division of delegates was based on the pre-election results in the states. Due to the complicated pre-election guidelines, in addition to the proportion of votes of the primaries and caucuses (conventions), other factors determined the proportion of delegates committed to a candidate. These guidelines vary from state to state. In some states, the delegates are divided up strictly according to proportional representation, while in other states threshold clauses of up to 15% exist.
It is also possible to vote for uncommitted , which results in a large number of delegates who can freely decide which candidate to vote for.
In addition, there are non-obligatory delegates ( super delegates for Democrats or ( RNC ) / bonus MPs for Republicans), usually incumbents and party officials. They are free to decide which candidate they want to support - the assignment was based on endorsements (non-binding statements of support).
The Associated Press conducted a poll of superdelegates in the first few weeks of November 2015. Of the 579 delegates that could be reached, 369 had chosen a candidate. Of them, 359 supported Clinton, eight Sanders, and two O'Malley. The AP describes these pledges as "public support". The complete list of the voting behavior of the delegates is kept secret from the public. The New York Times was fifth with as of July 2016 while Sanders was a Clinton superdelegates number of 591 to 48 with superdelegates. The Republicans counted 95 uncommitted delegates for Trump and 9 for Cruz despite the task.
Some candidates only ran in one or more states and were largely ignored in the media perception. In addition to some candidates who dropped out before the primaries due to poor poll numbers, only Hillary Clinton , Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley from the Democrats as well as Ben Carson , Carly Fiorina , Rick Santorum , Jeb Bush , Chris Christie , Ted Cruz , Jim took part in the television debates Gilmore , Mike Huckabee , John Kasich , Rand Paul , Marco Rubio and Donald Trump were invited to the Republicans.
Overall result
Those candidates who have withdrawn their application are no longer placed in the subsequent primaries and are only listed for the sake of form.
Donald Trump was elected presidential candidate at the Republican Convention on July 19, 2016 in Cleveland. His strongest rival in the primaries, Ted Cruz, refused to support him at the party conference. An attempt by delegates to change the voting rules to prevent Trump from being elected failed.
Hillary Clinton was elected a presidential candidate at the Democratic Party Conference in Philadelphia on July 26, 2016. In doing so, she received the support of her only major competitor from the primaries, Bernie Sanders. However, there were protests from supporters of Sanders. Before the start of the convention, party leader Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation after hacked and published emails revealed that the Democratic party leadership had swayed the primaries in favor of Hillary Clinton.

Overview
The table gives an overview of the delegate votes won by federal state. Depending on the election regulations in the sending state, the delegates of the applicants who had stopped their campaign were automatically unbound at the party congress, were expressly released by the applicant, or were still bound. The comments on this are not exhaustive. The obligatory delegates originally assigned to the applicant are always listed here.

Single results
All percentages are rounded. A score of 0.0% means that the candidate received less than 0.05% of the vote. In populous countries, this can affect up to several thousand votes received.
Due to the complicated preselection guidelines , other factors determine the proportion of delegates in addition to the voting share of the primary and caucuses (conventions). These differ from state to state.
