The Policía Nacional de Colombia (PNC) is the national police force of Colombia . It was launched on November 5, 1891 . Although it is not part of the armed forces of Colombia , it has been formally subordinate to the Ministry of Defense since 1953, but is considered the country's public body. The approximately 182,623 men (2017, including auxiliary police) strong force is the largest police organization in the country and operates nationally. It is led by Major General José Ángel Mendoza Guzmán as its director.

The Policía Nacional de Colombia was founded in 1891 with the support of the French police officer Marcelino Gilibert, at that time in the service of the national gendarmerie and the French interior ministry as an instructor in Bogotá . From 1964 to 2016, the PNC was involved in an armed conflict with the guerrilla groups Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia - Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP) and Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN).

The incorporated Dirección de Antinarcóticos (DIRAN), based at Bogotá Airport, has been part of the Policia Nacional since the 1980s and, with the war on drugs, is a focus of Colombia's police work. The National Anti-Drug Unit of the Colombian Police is helping to support the government in its policy of combating drug trafficking and other crimes across the country.
