Nicolet is a city ( ville ) and capital of the MRC Nicolet-Yamaska in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .
The place, located 15 km southwest of Trois-Rivières not far from the confluence of the Rivière Nicolet in the St. Lawrence River , owes its name to the French explorer Jean Nicolet .
Nicolet has been the seat of the Catholic diocese of Nicolet since 1885 . The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral is the fifth episcopal church and was built between 1961 and 1963.
