The intercept ( English interception , interception ',' listening ') is a publishing site that has been online since February 10, 2014. It is run by Laura Poitras , Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill and was funded by Pierre Omidyar .

Foundation and goals

Self-employed working journalists should the company make available relevant information without having to fear for their monetary livelihood. In discussions with Glenn Greenwald, the sponsor Pierre Omidyar found that there was a great deal of agreement on ideas about general conditions for press work and decided against the originally planned takeover of the Washington Post and in favor of founding the new media group First Look Media .

The short and medium-term focus of The Intercept will be on the further processing of the material from Edward Snowden , with which he triggered the world's largest espionage scandal after leaving the NSA . Greenwald gave up his job in the British daily The Guardian for this project , in which he published the first documents of this scandal in 2013.

On May 16, 2016 published the intercept under the name "SIDtoday Files", the first collected by Edward Snowden internal newsletter of the Signals Intelligence Directorate (SID) (Department of Communications Intelligence ) of the National Security Agency (NSA) from 2003, in which employees have documented their work in detail.

Usage ban for members of the US military

On August 20, 2014, Ryan Gallagher posted an article on The Intercept reporting instructions from various parts of the United States Armed Forces and the US Department of Defense to military personnel not to visit The Intercept .

He suspects the reason for this is the articles The Secret Government Rulebook For Labeling You a Terrorist and Barack Obama's Secret Terrorist-Tracking System, by the Numbers , published about a month earlier , in which Jeremy Scahill and Ryan Devereaux a leaked document about criteria for inclusion in a terrorism - Prepare the watchlist and the size of the affected group of people.

The Intercept can no longer be accessed via US military computers ; a warning from the United States Strategic Command is displayed instead of the website .

content

The purpose of the website is to collect the complex processes and technical details centrally and to prepare them for journalistic purposes. Corruption , abuse of justice , social injustice or the violation of civil rights are foreseen as fundamental topics .

At the launch of the website, the operators announced:

“A primary function of The Intercept is to insist upon and defend our press freedoms from those who wish to infringe them. We are determined to move forward with what we believe is essential reporting in the public interest and with a commitment to the ideal that a truly free and independent press is a vital component of any healthy democratic society. We believe the prime value of journalism is that it imposes transparency, and thus accountability, on those who wield the greatest governmental and corporate power. Our journalists will be not only permitted, but encouraged, to pursue stories without regard to whom they might alienate. "

The Intercept's fundamental mission is to insist on press freedom and defend it against those who violate it. We are determined to move forward in what we consider to be absolutely necessary reports in the public interest . Our dedication is to the ideal of a truly free and independent press as an indispensable part of any healthy democratic society . We believe that the main task of journalism is to create transparency and to show the accountability of those who have the greatest political and corporate power. Our journalists are not only permitted, they are even recommended, to follow stories regardless of who they might offend by it. "

It began with the publication of photos and video material by Trevor Paglen , on the building and premises of US intelligence services - the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Security Agency (NSA) - are shown. This first publication was made in collaboration with Creative Time Reports .

The second article contains an analysis that explains the technical and organizational connections that can lead to targeted killings , especially in the war on terror . The programs of the Five Eyes intelligence services and their involvement in international missions are documented, and former emergency services such as drone pilots have their say, who formulate specialist knowledge on the processes and accuracy of a large number of extrajudicial executions .

First look media

The eBay founder Omidyar funded First Look Media with a budget of 250 million US dollars , after the end of 2013 the acquisition of the Washington Post had rejected, but still remained interested in the media work. It will initially operate offices in New York City , San Francisco and Washington, DC . The profit-oriented media company First Look Media aims to become profitable through the sale of software and the distribution of know-how . The expected profit will be used to finance non-profit offshoots, which will be published in various other media in the future. These spin-offs should then not be subject to any profit obligation.
