First Look Media is a media group financed and founded by the entrepreneur , philanthropist and eBay founder Pierre Omidyar . The group is based on a collaboration between Omidyar and Glenn Greenwald , Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras .

Omidyar initially financed First Look Media with a budget of 250 million US dollars after rejecting the takeover of the Washington Post in late 2013 , but remaining interested in media work. The New York-based company is now funded by member donations and a for-profit media production company, Topic Studios , which produces and distributes streaming media programming . The resulting surplus is used to finance charitable spin - offs. These are the journalistic website The Intercept , founded in 2014 ; a documentary platform, Field of Vision ; and an advisory organization for persecuted journalists and whistleblowers , The Press Freedom Defense Fund . First Look publishes its annual report with financial statements.

In 2018, First Look Media received donations from 19,000 supporting members and employed 90 people. CEO is Michael Bloom, COO is Drew Wilson, and CCO is Jeannie Kedas. Co-founders Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill continue to hold senior positions at The Intercept, and Laura Poitras is Executive Producer at Field of Vision . The collaboration with Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi on a digital magazine ended after a few months in 2014 and Taibbi went back to Rolling Stone .
