Glenn Greenwald was born on March 6, 1967 in the New York borough of Queens to Arlene and Daniel Greenwald. Shortly after the birth, the family moved to the south of Florida , where he grew up and ran unsuccessfully for the Lauderdale Lakes city council at the age of 17 .

Legal activity

From 1994 to 1995 Greenwald worked for the renowned law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York, where he specialized in litigation. According to his own information, he had a large number of offers from well-known law firms, but decided in favor of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz , because they already offered all social benefits for same-sex partners at the time.

In 1996 he founded his own law firm Greenwald, Christoph & Holland (later Greenwald Christoph PC ) with befriended partners and handled cases that affected the constitutional or civil rights of US citizens. In 2005, Greenwald stopped practicing, according to his own statements, because he hoped that writing about political events would have a greater impact on society. He also stated that he was no longer dependent on the income of his law firm and that he was bored of lawsuits.

He went on a journey of several months and met his current life partner David Miranda in Brazil . Since it was not possible at the time to obtain a residence permit for the United States solely on the basis of a same-sex partnership, the two stayed in Rio de Janeiro , where they still live today. In June 2012, Greenwald moved to the British daily The Guardian . After his meeting with Edward Snowden in January 2013, he was mainly occupied with the preparation of the material made available by Snowden, allegedly amounting to nine to ten thousand files.

On August 18, 2013 David Miranda, Greenwald's partner was, after meeting with Laura Poitras in Berlin at London Heathrow Airport detained for nearly nine hours and interrogated. His electronic devices (mobile phone, laptop, camera, memory cards, DVDs and game consoles) were withheld. In total there were 58,000 GCHQ documents on the storage media , the unfiltered disclosure of which to the public - according to representatives of the Cameron government - could "endanger the security of Great Britain". According to a spokesman for Scotland Yard , this practice was covered by Section 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 for a maximum of 9 hours without formal justification and judicial review. In the following action by Miranda in the London High Court of Justice , the seizure and confiscation were found appropriate. The Guardian's lawyers unsuccessfully argued on the fundamental right to freedom of expression . The verdict recognized an "indirect conflict with freedom of the press ", but assessed the determination as "necessary" and "proportionate".

“We're disappointed by today's judgment, which means that an act designed to defeat terrorism can now be used to catch those who are working on fundamentally important issues. The judgment takes a narrow view of what 'journalism' is in the 21st century and a very wide view of the definition of 'terrorism'. "

“We are disappointed with today's ruling, which means that a law to protect against terrorism can now be used against those who pursue fundamentally important causes. The ruling shows a very narrow understanding of what 'journalism' means in the 21st century and a very generous one with regard to the definition of 'terrorism'. "

The appellate court considered the assessment to be lawful. It would be a question for the British Parliament whether the terrorism law complies with the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Intercept

In October 2013, Greenwald announced that they would be founding a new online journalistic medium together with Laura Poitras and Jeremy Scahill and financed by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar . On February 10, 2014 The Intercept launched :

“A primary function of The Intercept is to insist upon and defend our press freedoms from those who wish to infringe them. We are determined to move forward with what we believe is essential reporting in the public interest and with a commitment to the ideal that a truly free and independent press is a vital component of any healthy democratic society. We believe the prime value of journalism is that it imposes transparency, and thus accountability, on those who wield the greatest governmental and corporate power. Our journalists will be not only permitted, but encouraged, to pursue stories without regard to whom they might alienate. "
