The Wemyss Bay railway station is a terminal station in the Scottish city of Wemyss Bay in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

traffic

The station was opened in 1865 as the terminus of the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway , which connected Greenock with Wemyss Bay. Between 1903 and 1904, the Caledonian Railway completely redesigned the building. Today Wemyss Bay is the terminus of the Inverclyde Line of ScotRail , which connects the region to the city of Glasgow . A ferry dock is adjacent to the train station, which the ferry between Wemyss Bay and Rothesay on the island of Bute regularly serves.

description

The structure is located south of Wemyss Bay on the A78 . James Miller was responsible for the new building at the beginning of the 20th century . The station building is partly made with glare framework and the facades are decorated with Harl . The roofs are covered with red tiles. A Mediterranean-style tower rises to the left. The two platforms end in a hall that describes a segment of about two thirds of a circle. The ticket sales counter is located in the round building in the center of the circle. From there, a glass roof structure on steel girders arches over the hall. The roof construction continues in a south-westerly direction and covers the curved passage to the ferry terminal. In 1994 the structure was restored for £ 1.8 million. Wemyss Bay Railway Station is considered one of the most beautiful stations from this period in the United Kingdom.
