Suicide attack in Gaziantep

At least 54 people were killed and 66 others injured in a suicide attack in Gaziantep in Southeastern Anatolia , Turkey on August 20, 2016.

Sequence of events

At around 10:50 p.m. local time (9:50 p.m. CEST ), a suicide bomber blew himself up at a wedding reception in Akdere ( Şahinbey district ) in the south of Gaziantep city . The HDP stated that it was a wedding of Kurdish families who were also members of the HDP. The celebration was the henna night before the wedding, which is why there were many women and children among the dead. The bridal couple was injured. Remnants of an explosive belt were found at the scene . Eyewitnesses reported pieces of metal being thrown through the air. Body parts were torn off from numerous victims.

54 people died and 66 others were injured in the attack. There were 22 children among the dead.

Perpetrator

A parliamentary official in the ruling AKP party blamed the Islamic State (IS) for the attack.

Reactions

The HDP said plans to attack a “Kurdish wedding” were part of the indictments against those who perpetrated the massacre at the Ankara peace meeting in October, and accused the political leadership of failing to take the necessary steps despite warnings in order to prevent such a thing. ”The HDP communication also stated verbatim:“ The language of revulsion used by the political leadership and the discrimination it has created in the area of ​​democratic politics prepare the ground for such attacks. Those who sow hatred and enmity towards the Kurds and encourage them commit a great sin. "

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the attack as an act of "cowardly and underhand violence" and declared that the German government was "still close to Turkey in the fight against terrorism."

On August 24, 2016 , Turkey attacked ISIS in Syria with ground troops .
