Henna night

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The henna night is among Muslims popular wedding customs .

procedure

In Turkey , the henna night generally has the following sequence: one night before the wedding reception , the bride , female relatives and friends meet to dye the bride's palms and fingers with henna . Since it is the last night before the wedding, it should be symbolically sad. Therefore, sad songs are sung for a while. As the evening progresses, however, the atmosphere becomes more cheerful, guests are served a good meal and the evening is spent in a festive circle. In the other Islamic countries, too, the henna ceremony for the wedding is similar. The wedding can even last for several days and include various rituals . The festivities with music after the official wedding go on for a long time.

symbolism

The color red symbolizes fertility and stands for a great love, many children and prosperity. Therefore, at a traditional wedding, the bride wears a small red veil that covers her face, her hands are painted with henna.

Differentiation from comparable customs

In contrast to the Hen Night custom , which is widespread in Christian countries , no alcohol is drunk, the atmosphere is less lively and there are no sexual innuendos. Comparable to stag parties , however, is that it is a gender-segregated event. This is not the case , for example, at hen parties .
