Car keys are keys that are required for locking, opening and as ignition keys also for starting motor vehicles , mostly designed as reversible keys or newer ones without any key bit. They also serve to release the mechanical lock prescribed in Germany (mostly designed as a steering wheel lock ).

Modern car keys are radio keys with which the doors can be locked and unlocked both mechanically and by remote control . They transmit in the ISM band in the range of 433 MHz . A forerunner technology of the radio keys were car keys that sent infrared . In new vehicles, a transponder ( RFID chip) is integrated into the key, the data of which is necessary to activate an immobilizer .

The car key can also be used to lock and unlock seat back locks, the glove compartment or similar storage options. Often it is also used to switch the passenger airbag on and off in order to be able to fit child seats , or to open and close the fuel filler flap or the fuel filler cap to prevent unauthorized access to the fuel tank.
