Notes on the number of medals awarded in individual competitions
Two bronze medals were awarded in each competition in the following sports:
This corresponds to a total of 53 additional bronze medals.
Due to the fact that the finish was equal, there were also exceptions to the usual award of a gold, silver and bronze medal in each of the 306 competitions:
- In the women's 100-meter freestyle swimming , there were two gold medalists at the same time, so a silver medal was not awarded.
- In the 100-meter butterfly swimming men , there were three simultaneous silver medalist; accordingly no bronze medal was awarded.
- In the women's 100-meter backstroke , two athletes at the same time each won bronze.
- In the men's kayak competition, two boats at the same time won bronze in the individual sprint over 200 m .
Changes in the medal table
During the Olympic Games, two doping cases became known on August 18, which led or will lead to the withdrawal of medals. The Kyrgyz weightlifter Issat Artykow was stripped of the bronze medal in the competition for men up to 69 kg because of doping . The bronze medal went to the Colombian Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano , who finished fourth in the competition.
Furthermore, a doping case in canoe racing became known, which can have an impact on the award of medals. The Moldovan canoeist Serghei Taranovschi had a positive doping test before the games. However , he is allowed to keep the bronze medal won in the single canoe over 1000 m until the process is completed. If it was withdrawn, it would go to the fourth-placed Russian Ilya Shtokalov .
The Russian boxer Michail Alojan , who won silver in the weight class up to 52 kg, and the Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian , who won bronze in the weight class up to 85 kg, were subsequently disqualified for doping offenses and lost their medals.
