Medal table of the 1904 Summer Olympics
At the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis , only 42 of 689 athletes were not from the United States. This explains their enormous dominance in this medal table.
For the first time, the first three places were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in their current form, previously there had been silver and bronze medals for the first two at the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 and the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 .
