The SOBR ( Russian С пециальные о тряды б ыстрого р еагирования , German about Rapid Special Reaction Force ) is a special unit of the Russian Interior Ministry comparable to the Special Operations Command . In contrast to the OMON , the unit consists exclusively of experienced police officers of higher rank.
history
The unit was officially dissolved in the course of restructuring on September 16, 2002 by a resolution by Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov . In fact, however, the force has only been renamed OMSN (Russian о тряд м илиции с пециального н азначения , for example police special unit ) and placed under the command of regional police forces. Due to the still common designation as SOBR, the unit was renamed again in November 2011.
assignment
Although SOBR units are mainly used to fight terrorism , the fight against organized crime and national drug trafficking is also part of the range of tasks of this elite group . For this purpose, the relatives undergo intensive training and have state-of-the-art equipment and armament.
Calls
SOBR and OMSN units were used by the Russian government in the Chechen conflict. In addition, troops from OMSN and OMON were jointly deployed when Beslan was taken hostage in September 2004.
