The 2016 Oakland warehouse fire was a disaster that occurred on December 2, 2016. A fire started during an illegal techno party in an artist-owned warehouse in Fruitvale, Oakland, killing 36 people. It is the largest fire disaster in Oakland history and the event with the most deaths since the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 .

The fire started around 11:30 p.m. ( PST ) on December 2, 2016 in a disused warehouse that housed an artist collective known as the Oakland Ghost Ship. The fire could only be brought under control after four to five hours. 52 firefighters were on duty and fought the fire with eleven engines and three trucks.

At the time of the fire, numerous people were attending an unapproved techno party . At the beginning of the fire, a few people were still able to save themselves, for the other visitors any help came too late. The rescue work was made more difficult by the fact that the roof collapsed. A drone with a thermal imaging camera was used after the fire was extinguished, but no survivors were found.

At the techno party, which was advertised by the Los Angeler dance label 100% Silk, the two DJs Golden Donna (Joel Shanahan) and Aja Archuleta played the headliners , both of whom were able to save themselves. Cherushii (Chelsea Faith) and DJ Nackt (Johnny Igaz) are missing.

The fire disaster was favored by the fact that neither a sprinkler system nor smoke alarms were available in the building. In addition, the building was also used by the artists as an exhibition space and artfully furnished so that there was a lot of fire load . In addition, there were no suitable emergency exits. In addition, the building suffered from defective electronics. The building was already under observation by the Oakland Planning and Building Department due to structural defects. The December 2nd event had not been approved.

Reactions

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf called the fire a "tremendous catastrophe". The California Governor Jerry Brown expressed his condolences. Congresswoman Barbara Lee also offered her condolences and expressed gratitude for the work of the fire department and first responders . She also promised support from the state. Other responses came from Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom , Senator Kamala Harris and Rob Bonta of the California State Assembly .

The Oakland Athletics baseball team and the Oakland Raiders American football team pledged approximately $ 30,000 in financial aid. The Golden State Warriors basketball team also pledged financial contributions of $ 50,000. A safety check has been activated on Facebook , in which relatives can search for missing persons.
