H3G SpA was a Hutchison Whampoa company . Under the brand name 3 (or: 3 Italia as well as Tre ) it offered cellular services and was the smallest cellular operator in Italy. On December 31, 2016, the company was merged with Wind Telecomunicazioni to form Wind Tre , 3 remaining as a brand.

network

In contrast to other mobile network operators, H3G only had a small UMTS and LTE network; the network of the operator Telecom Italia was leased for 2G-GSM . Roaming in the TIM network was usually associated with additional costs for 3 customers, but since 2015 H3G has been offering data packages for roaming in the TIM network.

Almost 40% of the population was covered with LTE and 94% with UMTS. At the beginning of 2014, H3G acquired frequencies in the 900 MHz range for UMTS, with which the base stations are constantly being upgraded. H3G was the only operator in Italy that did not have an LTE spectrum in the 805 MHz range and as a result had difficulties with LTE coverage in buildings and in rural areas. H3G had put several LTE-Advanced base stations into operation in 2015 , but only for test purposes - therefore H3G did not advertise LTE-A either. It is not clear whether the LTE Advanced network was accessible at all ; the cells designed for carrier aggregation operation (with the same cell ID only different sector ID for the cells from the other sector) were previously only measured in independent measurements found. Another indication of the non-commercial use was that the systems equipped with LTE-A were never located in town centers, but in remote areas such as motorway exits and airports.
