The Iliad Italia SpA is an Italian mobile operator based in Milan . As a subsidiary of the French Iliad Group, the company operates throughout Italy since the spring of 2018 in addition to Telecom Italia , Vodafone Italia and Wind Tre the fourth Italian mobile network with over 5,810,000 customers on 31 March 2020th

history

Iliad Italia was founded in 2016 as the Italian subsidiary of the French Iliad. In 2017, the acquisition of the frequencies that were no longer used as a result of the merger of Wind Telecomunicazioni and H3G began . As of December 31, 2017, Iliad took over almost 300 of the sites abandoned by Wind Tre, with the remainder to be transferred by the end of 2019.

In 2018 Benedetto Levi was appointed managing director. As part of the development of the necessary infrastructure to cover Italy with its own network, an agreement was signed on February 16, 2018 with the Spanish group Cellnex, which will provide Iliad with more than 7,700 cellular antennas. They started operating on May 29, 2018. As early as July 18, 2018, Iliad officially announced that it had reached one million customers and two million customers on September 6, 2018.

Iliad introduced Simboxing in Italy . These are machines developed by the French group "Aures" that offer the purchase and registration of SIM cards.

Cellular network

Iliad received, through a merger with Wind Tre, the right to use newly consolidated locations or to take over locations that had become vacant throughout Italy - after the merger between Wind and Tre. Therefore, only a few plants are being built. As a further merger condition, 35 MHz of the freed, former Tre Funk spectrum was transmitted to Iliad. Of this, 20-30 MHz are intended for LTE and 15-5 MHz for UMTS . At the 5G auction 2018, Iliad was able to bid for a further 30 MHz, which is intended for 5G. Iliad started its own network expansion in 2018 with transmission systems that broadcast on 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz, since 2020 the frequency 2100 MHz has also been used for LTE in many places. 700, 900 and 3600 MHz are not yet active (as of 2020), but technology for 900 is built into all transmission systems, 700Mhz is planned for all.

With a few exceptions, locations will be expanded immediately with all available frequencies and technologies due to the shortage of frequencies. Hardware from Nokia or Cisco Systems and antennas from Commscope or Huawei are used . Iliad locations can be identified by the 5 to 7 gray Nokia RRUs as well as by the large multiband antennas.

At the end of March 2019, the first Iliad LTE test field was activated in the north of Milan, near the headquarters. Since then, the network has been steadily expanded; at the end of 2019, around 2000 transmitter systems were active in the Iliad network. In the rest of the country that is not covered, owners of an Iliad SIM are booked into the Wind Tre network. The RAN sharing technology is used for this.

frequency Bandwidth technology
700 MHz (currently not active, not expanded) 10 MHz 5G
900 MHz (currently not active, but expanded) 5 MHz UMTS
1800 MHz 10 MHz LTE
2100 MHz (partly active as LTE) 10 MHz UMTS (planned) + LTE
2600 MHz 10 MHz LTE
3700 MHz (currently not active) 20 MHz 5G
