On December 7, 2016, an ATR 42-500 crashed on Pakistan International Airlines flight 661 , a scheduled flight operated by Pakistan International Airlines from Chitral to Islamabad . The aircraft disappeared from the radar at 16:42 local time (11:42 UTC ) after the crew declared an air emergency due to the failure of the left engine . It crashed about 50 kilometers north of the destination airport in the town of Havelian near Abbottabad and hit a wooded, inaccessible mountainside. There were 5 crew members and 42 passengers on board; there were no survivors.

Airplane and occupants

The ATR 42-500 with the serial number 663 completed its maiden flight on May 3, 2007 and was delivered to Pakistan International Airlines on May 16, 2007 . The aircraft had the aircraft registration AP-BHO. By the time the incident occurred, it had completed 18,740 flight hours.

The crew consisted of 5 people: the flight captain, first officer , trainee pilot and two flight attendants . There were 42 passengers on board, 31 of them male including two flight safety attendants , 9 female and 2 children. Among the passengers were the Pakistani singer and preacher Junaid Jamshed , his wife Nahya Junaid and the Deputy Commissioner of the Chitral District , Osama Ahmed Warraich.
