Pierre Laurent (politician)

Pierre Laurent (born July 1, 1957 in Paris ) is a French economist , editor and politician of the PCF . From December 5, 2010 to December 17, 2016, he was party leader of the European Left .

Life

Laurent is a son of former PCF MP Paul Laurent . While studying economics in Paris, he joined the Union des étudiants communistes (UEC) and headed this student association from 1982 to 1985. After graduating from Université Paris 1 , he worked as a business journalist for the PCF daily L'Humanité , its editor-in-chief he was from 2001 to 2008.

Since 2000 he has also been a member of the National Council of the PCF. On June 20, 2010, he was elected to succeed Marie-George Buffet, PCF General Secretary, with the new title of “secrétaire national”. Fabien Roussel was elected as his successor at the 38th PCF Congress at the end of November 2018 .

In 2017 Laurent was elected to the French Senate.
