Location of the bay

The Subic Bay (from Spanish Bahía de Súbic ) is a bay on the Philippine island of Luzón , about 100 km northwest of Manila Bay . The bay is framed by Bataan in the south, the province of Zambales , more precisely the municipality of Subic in the north and the municipality of Olongapo City in the east. In the hinterland east of the bay is the Subic Watershed Forest Reserve . In addition, the beaches on Subic Bay serve as a recreational area for residents of the metropolitan area of Manila . The Ocean Adventure , a zoo with a dolphinarium, is located on a branch of the Subic Bay . The marine mammals caught there live in a fenced area of the bay.

history

Since 1898 the United States Naval Base Subic Bay was located in the bay , a base of the United States Navy , against which Filipino politicians protested until its dissolution in 1992. However, after China had effectively brought Scarborough Reef under its control in the course of the territorial conflicts in the China Sea in 2012, US warships were again stationed in Subic Bay under the EDCA agreement .

The base has been used commercially since the US forces withdrew. Blue chips pumped over $ 3 billion into the region, created 70,000 jobs on the edge of the bay, and built a free port .

In 1996, an APEC meeting was held in Subic Bay.

From 2006, the Korean shipbuilding group Hanjin Heavy Industries built a subsidiary here; Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Philippines (HHIC Phil for short) is the largest shipyard in the Philippines and one of the largest in the world.
