FEI Nations Cup 2017 (Eventing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FEI Nations Cup 2017 in eventing (2017 FEI Nations Cup ™ Eventing) was the sixth season of the Nations Cup for eventing .

Course of the tournament series

As in the previous year for the first time, the series also included special stages in Europe as well as a stage in the United States of America in 2017. Most of the exams were  advertised as CICO 3 *, only the final stage was deviating as CCIO 3 *. Due to the cancellation of the first stage, the tournament series only started on May 17th and ended on October 8th, 2017.

In the evaluation tests, the winning team received 100 points each, the following teams received a descending number of evaluation points. For each rider who did not finish the test, the teams received 1000 minus points in the test. This ensured that all teams finish with a result and receive points for the Nations Cup.

The exams

1st test: Italy

After the Italian Nations Cup was held in Vidigulfo-Vairano last year, he was supposed to return to Montelibretti in 2017 . But as in 2015, there was no Nations Cup. Instead of the CICO 3 *, a CIC 3 * with seven participants was held from April 20 to 23, 2017.

2nd test: Poland

A good six months before the European Eventing Championships , Strzegom was also the venue for the Polish Nations Cup tournament. The Strzegom Horse Trials , which were held here from May 17th to 21st, 2017 included the CICO 3 * national prize and five other eventing tests, from the 1 * eventing to the CCI 3 *.

Similar to later at the European Championships, the cross-country course was decisive for the outcome of the test in April. Only one rider (Alexander Bragg) finished the route without any further negative points. The German team riders each scored 3.20 to 6.80 minus points in the field. This gave Germany only 17 minus points and the lead after the dressage was significantly expanded. Also in the final jumping there was hardly a rider with his horse without mistakes. However, the lead of the leading German team was so great that their victory was safe. It was similar in the individual ranking: Here the German individual rider Kai Rüder won ahead of two German team riders.

3rd test: United Kingdom

The Houghton International Horse Trials , the British stage of the Nations Cup, took place from May 25th to 28th in 2017. The venue was the country estate of Houghton Hall in the county of Norfolk .

The number of teams that competed here was significantly lower than in the previous year - at the same time, a highly endowed CCI 3 * took place in Saumur. Instead of seven there were four teams at the start. Three of the teams remained well below 200 minus points. Only three team riders got 20 or more minus points in the area. With only 7.6 minus points to the dressage result, Germany won the test. There were a good 20 minus points more for the host nation in second place. In the individual ranking, Bettina Hoy won by over five minus points over Julia Krajewski, both of whom finished the test with their dressage result.

4th test: Ireland

After the Irish Nations Cup tournament had been held on the grounds of Ballindenisk House for three years, the venue changed in 2017. The Nations Cup took place from May 31st to June 4th on the grounds of the Tattersalls Country House in Ratoath , a good 10 kilometers outside of Dublin.

There were three teams at the start. France took the lead after dressage. With three rides that only got four minus points in the terrain, the French were able to hold this tour until the end of the three partial tests. Great Britain and Ireland got significantly more minus points in the field, in the final ranking they came in second and third.

5th exam: Austria

For the first time, an Austrian stage was also part of the Nations Cup. The Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt was chosen as the venue . One or two international versatility tournaments were held here in previous years, but so far at a maximum of 2 * level. The Nations Cup tournament in Wiener Neustadt was, as a CICO 3 *, the only 3 * eventing tournament that was held in Austria in 2017. It took place from June 30th to July 2nd, 2017.

After the dressage, the German team was in the lead and was able to maintain this in the field. Austria, on the other hand, lost some ground in the field and fell back to sixth place. Manfred Rust and his horse Hugo Holiday had the weakest result of the four team riders in Austria in dressage, they were eliminated in the area at the Coffin. Overall, the cross-country course was demanding: No starter stayed in the allowed time, only one rider received less than ten additional minus points.

But the veterinary check-up after the off-road day and the jumping competition brought the Austrians forward: the Czech Republic had to accept the loss of two more riders, Great Britain and Switzerland one more team rider each. The Austrians taking part in a stage of the Nations Cup for the first time came third in the final result. The Netherlands placed second, Germany won the test. In the individual classification, the British Georgie Spence secured victory with a lead of over ten minus points.

6. Exam: United States of America

In the small town of The Plains in Virginia , 75 km from Washington DC, the United States' Nations Cup took place on July 8th and 9th, 2017. The Great Meadow International Nations Cup was advertised as a CICO 3 *. It was organized as a two-day event, so the dressage and jumping took place on the first day of the tournament, while the cross-country test took up the second day.

The starting field consisted of 32 horses with their riders. Mostly US riders were at the start, but Great Britain and Canada also provided a Nations Cup team. While the victory of the hosts in the previous year was clear, it was narrower in 2017: While the United States came up with a final result of 151.5 minus points, the Canadians finished the test with a result of 168.6 minus points. This distance could have been even closer, but Canada's best pair up to jumping, Jessica Phoenix and Pavarotti , noticeably exceeded the ideal time in the field and received 12.4 minus points for this.

In the individual standings, Lynn Symansky was only 0.3 minus points apart from the winner, Jennifer Brannigan.

7. Exam: Germany

As part of the CHIO Aachen , the German Nations Cups are held annually in five disciplines, including eventing. The tournament took place from July 14 to 23, 2017 in Aachen . The eventing riders first competed in the dressage and jumping competitions on Friday, July 21st, and the final cross-country test on the following day.

Three team riders with dressage results of over 76 percent gave the German team a clear lead. Germany got four minus points to the team result in jumping, the second-placed Australians eight minus points. The cross-country course was built by Rüdiger Schwarz and was therefore seen as a “foretaste” for the European Championships in August , for whose cross-country course Schwarz was also responsible. Only a few riders stayed in the allowed time, but there were few riders. Six of 37 starters in the area did not finish the course.

The Australian team lost touch with the German team in the field after Emma McNab got 40 minus points and Katja Weimann's result was significantly worse up to now in the team ranking. Germany, on the other hand, was able to finish the test with three riders with less than 38 minus points, even Josefa Sommer, who counted as a discarded result, came 13th in the individual ranking with Hamilton .

8th test: France

In previous years, the French Nations Cup tournament in Fontainebleau, which took place at the end of March, marked the start of the series of Nations Cups. In January 2017 it was announced that the tournament would not take place in 2017, especially for financial reasons. As a replacement for this, the 3 * short test of the Le Grand Complet Haras du Pin tournament was upgraded to the French Nations Cup. The event took place on the grounds of the French national stud Haras du Pin in Le Merlerault , where the eventing event was held at the 2014 World Equestrian Games .

The Nations Cup tournament took place from August 10th to 13th, 2017 and ended just four days before the start of the European Championships in Strzegom . Accordingly, different couples were at the start for the nations, four nations had sent teams to the Haras du Pin. While Olympic champion France finished the European championships far behind in 11th place, they were victorious in the domestic Nations Cup. Although the majority of the participants only collected minus points for exceeding the ideal time in the field, the three other teams each had to accept one team rider who had been eliminated.

Five pairs remained below 50 minus points in the individual evaluation. The victory went to the Australian Christopher Burton with four minus points .

9th test: Belgium

One month after the European Championships, the penultimate stage of the Nations Cup took place in Waregem . The Nations Cup tournament of Belgium, International Eventing Waregem , was held from September 21 to 24, 2017. After the dressage, Germany was in the lead; Great Britain, Sweden and the Japanese, who started with only three riders, also had a dressage team result of less than 140 minus points. Even in jumping, Sweden had to accept Anna Nilsson's fall and with it the end of the race, which threw her back to sixth.

During the cross-country course, only eight of the 66 riders who had made it to the finish had one or more runners. The main challenge was the ideal time of seven minutes, which none of the starters kept. 19 couples did not finish the site (abandonment or eliminated). The four riders of the German team allowed themselves timeouts of 12 to 45 seconds, but no further mistakes. Thus, Germany won by 8.5 minus points. Great Britain in second place and the fifth placed Dutch all brought their riders to the finish. Japan and Sweden, on the other hand, only had one team rider in the final result, which threw them back to sixth and seventh place.

France's best team rider Maxime Livio also won the individual ranking with Pica d'Or . The German single starter Felix Etzel was in the lead after the dressage, an obstacle error in jumping prevented his victory in the end. He came in second in front of another individual starter from Germany, Andreas Ostholt.

10th test: Netherlands

Furthermore, the only Nations Cup at the 3 * long-term test level (CCIO 3 *) was held in Boekelo . As one of the last tournaments of the season in Europe, Military Boekelo has always been the last stage of the Nations Cup since the first season. The Nations Cup tournament of the Netherlands took place from October 5th to 8th, 2017. The prize money was 47,700 euros.

After the dressage, New Zealand was in the lead, as the only team had less than 130 minus points. Persistent rain on the off-road day made the off-road route even more challenging. The team result changed significantly compared to the dressage: The second-placed French got almost 100 minus points and fell back to seventh place. The United States and Belgium also had to accept similarly high increases in their results, and Italy even got around 200 minus points. Switzerland only brought half of its four team riders to the finish. With an increase of less than 50 minus points, the Irish were the winners of the off-road day and moved up from tenth to fourth place.

Before the constitutional examination on the last day, two British team riders and one other Swiss team rider withdrew, so that both teams fell back to the last two places and remained there even after the jumping. The German team got eight minus points in jumping and thus held the second place on which they had been after the area. With eight minus points, New Zealand retained its lead and won the Boekelo team championship.

Tim Price, a New Zealand team rider, also won the individual competition. Individual riders from different nations followed in places two to five.

Overall rating

The rating points were awarded in 2017 according to the new system introduced in the previous year . A maximum of seven results per nation were included in the overall ranking; the team with the highest number of points wins the overall ranking.

Although Germany dominated the season with four winners after seven stages, Great Britain was in the lead in the overall standings at this point, as the British took part in two more Nations Cups and thus had more points overall. From the eighth stage, the limit to a maximum of seven results per nation came into play. Just in time for the end of the season, Germany took over the top position and won the Nations Cup series as in the previous year.
