Ahlerich (* May 20, 1971 ; † 1992 ) was a Westphalian gelding who won the gold medal in dressage riding at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles together with Reiner Klimke .

From Remonte to Grand Prix

Klimke bought Ahlerich at an auction in 1975 in Warendorf . Although he did not actually look for or need another horse, he, together with the then manager of the Westphalian Horse Studbook , Ferdinand Dohmen , selected the four-year-old horse Ahlerich after preparing various horses . The brown gelding, which was descended from the thoroughbred Angelo, was bought at this auction for a record price of 42,000 DM, although far fewer were originally planned. This made Ahlerich the star of the auction. In 1978 he had his first Grand Prix start.

successes

The most significant successes were winning the world championship in Lausanne in 1982 , winning the team European title in 1983 and winning the Olympic gold medal in 1984 in Los Angeles . After this victory, Klimke wrote: “You can't talk to horses, but I imagine: Ahlerich knew what it was about on that day.” In 1985 he won the individual and team European championships in Copenhagen and at the Olympic Games Playing in Seoul in 1988, winning the gold medal with the German equestrian team.

In 1992 Ahlerich died of colic at the age of 21 .

Klimke described in his book "From Remonte to Dressage World Champion: Ahlerich, an exemplary training path" in detail the training and successes of the horse.
