Johann Christoph Bernsmeyer
Johann Christoph Bernsmeyer (* 15. May 1777 in Verl , † 2. June 1858 in Telgte ) was Franciscan pater and founder of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Mauritz .
Life
Johann Christoph Bernsmeyer was born on May 15, 1777 in Verl. He attended school in Gütersloh or Rietberg and studied philosophy in the Franciscan monastery in Warendorf, then theology in their main monastery in Münster. In Hamm he entered the novitiate of the Saxon Franciscan Province of the Holy Cross on September 13, 1801 . A year later he made his profession . He was ordained a priest on January 24, 1805, after which he finished his studies and was employed in pastoral care. After the dissolution of the Franciscan monastery in Münster in 1811, Bernsmeyer went to Telgte as a pilgrimage pastor and chaplain . In 1844 Bernsmeyer bought a former leprosarium in Telgte with his own funds . There he had an orphanage and later a hospital built. From this the Congregation of Nurses of the Regulated Third Order of St. Francis of Munster. At his death in 1858 there were 150 sisters in 23 branches. Today it has many charitable organizations in Germany, North America, Japan, Poland and India.
Bernsmeyer died in Telgte on June 2, 1858. His grave has been in the nurses' cemetery at St. Rochus Hospital in Telgte since 1950 .
