Peter Janssens

Peter "Piet" Janssens (born June 17, 1934 in Telgte near Münster ; † December 24, 1998 ibid) was a German musician , composer and co-founder of sacro pop .

Life

Peter Janssens was born as the last of twelve children near the small town of Telgte in Westphalia. The rural life in a place dominated by many pilgrimages and the piano lessons he began at a young age with his mother determined his childhood. Visiting the grammar school in neighboring Münster opened up new, soon also student circles, in which Janssens began to think politically.

From 1961 Peter Janssens studied sociology, history and musicology at the University of Münster .

After a stay as musical director of drama music at the Deutsches Theater in Buenos Aires , Argentina , he studied music at the Cologne University of Music and was employed as a répétiteur at the Munster Municipal Theaters.

Peter Janssens was musical director at the Bad Hersfeld Festival from 1966 to 1975 .

During this time the desire arose to put his religious convictions into practice musically. Thus began a creative period in the area of church congregations and youth associations that were open to the New Spiritual Song , which began with beat measurements and went on to full-length musicals . In order to be able to present the songs in public in concerts, at church services and in the context of church days, Janssens founded a "singing orchestra" in 1976, in which Ludger Edelkötter and Detlev Jöcker also participated. Singers, the majority of whom can also be employed as instrumentalists, form a permanent ensemble for the frequent appearances and performances in German-speaking countries.

Janssens composed numerous new sacred songs, songs and musicals (Dietrich Bonhoeffer - a life in the resistance) . In addition to sacred songs, he composed numerous children's songs (e.g. Mr. Uklatsch ). He worked with Alois Albrecht , Friedrich Karl Barth , Wilhelm Willms , Rolf Krenzer , Ernesto Cardenal and Jürgen Fliege , among others . At numerous major church events, he enthused people with his songs.

When asked what a successful song is, Peter Janssens once answered: "When a good text and a good melody come together and marry, it becomes a third, a good song!"

The songs by Peter Janssens found their way into the hymn book of the Evangelical Methodist Church , the Catholic praise of God and the Evangelical hymnal .
