Mairead McGuinness ( Irish Máiréad Nic Aonasa , born June 13, 1959 in Drogheda , County Louth ) is an Irish politician .

Life

McGuinness grew up in Ardee , County Louth in a parental home affiliated with Fine Gael . She studied agricultural economics at University College Dublin and was the first female graduate in the subject in 1980 when she received her Bachelor of Science degree . In 1984 she received her diploma in accounting and finance. McGuinness has now worked in the media, including for the public broadcasting company Radio Telefís Éireann , for the Irish Farmers Journal , for the local radio LMFM and also for the daily Irish Independent .

In June 2004 she was elected to the European Parliament for the Fine Gael and from now on she devoted herself to her political career. As a member of the European Parliament , she belongs to the Group of the European People's Party and European Democrats . In May 2007, McGuinness ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Dáil Éireann . In 2014 she was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament for the first time , and in 2019 she was confirmed in this position.

McGuinness is married and has four children. She lives with her family near Drumconrath in County Meath .

In 2006, she was voted MEP of the Year by Magill magazine .
