Michael "Mick" Wallace (born November 9, 1955 in Wellington Bridge , County Wexford ) is an Irish businessman , activist and politician. Wallace, who regularly causes a stir in the Irish media with provocative statements, was Teachta Dála at Dáil Éireann from February 2011 to July 2019 . Since the European elections in 2019 he has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the GUE / NGL group .

Life

Education and career

Mick Wallace was born on November 9, 1955 in Wellington Bridge , Wexford, as one of twelve children. After graduating from school, he studied English, history and philosophy at University College Dublin to become a teacher. He completed his studies in 1983. However, Wallace did not switch to school service, but to the private sector.

In 2007 Wallace founded the football club Wexford Youths , which he also ran for three seasons.

Irish politics

In 2011 Wallace ran for the first time for the Irish general election as an independent candidate in the constituency of Wexford. During his first term as Teachta Dála , he founded the socialist party Independents 4 Change together with other fellow campaigners . Politically, he was particularly active against the government's austerity measures. He has also garnered attention in the Irish media for his lifestyle and colorful t-shirts, as well as tax problems and bankruptcies.

In the general election in 2016 , Wallace ran again in the constituency of Wexford, this time as a candidate for the Independents 4 Change party, which he founded , and defended his mandate.

European politics

In April 2019, Wallace and his colleague Clare Daly decided to run as an independent candidate for the European elections. Above all, the increasing importance of the European Union on Ireland in times of Brexit motivated the two.

In the election, Wallace won one of the five mandates in the European constituency of Southern Ireland with 11.37 percent of the preferential votes. Together with Clare Daly, who also won a mandate in the European constituency of Dublin, both joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . For the group, Wallce is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Subcommittee on Security and Defense. He is also a deputy member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Private

Wallace was married from 1979 to 1992, and from this first marriage he has two children. Wallace has two other children from a second relationship from the 1990s.
