Deirdre Clune (nee Barry ; born June 1, 1959 ) is an Irish politician . She was a member of the Dáil Éireann from 1997 to 2002 and from 2007 to 2011 , a member of the Seanad Éireann from 2011 to 2014 and a member of the European Parliament since 2014 .

Life

Clune attended University College Cork , where she studied civil engineering . After graduating, she went freelance and worked in Ireland and abroad for several years. As the daughter and granddaughter of politicians Peter Barry and Anthony Barry , Deirdre Clune has always had an interest in politics. In 1997, after her father withdrew from active politics, she successfully ran for Fine Gael for election to the Dáil Éireann . She was elected to the Cork City Council in 1999 and re-elected in 2004. In the election for Dáil Éireann 2002, Clune lost her seat as Teachta Dála and her attempt to be elected to the Seanad Éireann in the same year failed. As a member of the Cork City Council , she held the office of Lord Mayor of Cork from 2005 to 2006 . This office was exercised before her by her father Peter and her grandfather Anthony. During her tenure as Lord Mayor of Cork , Cork was European Capital of Culture . In May 2007, Clune was elected to the 30th Dáil Éireann; in the course of this she resigned her mandate in the Cork City Council . From 2011 to 2014 she was a member of the Seanad Éireann. In the 2014 European elections , Clune was elected to the European Parliament .

Deirdre Clune is married and has four sons.
