Yana Toom (born Tšernogorova; born October 15, 1966 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian journalist and politician . In 2014 she became a member of the European Parliament . She belongs to the Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ).

Early years

Yana Toom was born as the daughter of the later politician Margarita Tšernogorova (* 1933). Her mother tongue is Russian . She graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1983. From 1983 to 1987 she studied Russian Language and Literature at Tartu State University , but did not graduate. After regaining Estonian independence, she opted for Russian citizenship.

Journalist

Toom began a journalistic career with Russian-language newspapers in Estonia . From 1994 to 1997 she was correspondent Molodjož Estonii (Молодёжь Эстонии), 1997-2004 editor (from 1999 editor in chief) of the weekly newspaper Den za Dnjom (День за Днём) and 2004-2006 chief editor of the weekly paper Vesti Nedeli (Вести Недели). From 2008 to 2010 she headed the press department of the Tallinn city administration and was also editor-in-chief of the Russian-language city administration newspaper Stolitsa (Столица).

politician

In December 2005, Yana Toom was granted Estonian citizenship “for special merits” at the suggestion of her mentor, Tallinn's Lord Mayor Edgar Savisaar ; she then gave up her Russian citizenship. In 2008 she joined the Estonian Center Party . From June 2010 to July 2011 she was Deputy Mayor of the Estonian capital.

In the 2011 parliamentary election she was elected as a member of the Riigikogu . In the 2014 European elections , Yana Toom was elected to the European Parliament as one of six Estonian MEPs .

Private life

Yana Toom is third married to the entrepreneur Aleksei Toom. She has four sons and one daughter.
