Riivo Sinijärv (born May 27, 1947 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician, chemist and economist.

Chemist

Riivo Sinijärv graduated from Tartu University in 1969 with a degree in chemistry and was employed as an engineer in chemical technology at the Tallinn Polytechnic until 1977 . From 1969 to 1973 he was also a research fellow at the Chemistry Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . From 1980 to 1988 Sinijärv worked at the Institute for Chemical and Biological Physics. From 1988 to 1992 he was director of Kemotex Bio AS.

Politician

With the regaining of Estonian independence, Sinijärv also got involved politically. In 1992 he was first deputy minister for industry and energy, in 1992/93 a member of the Estonian parliament and from 1993 to 1995 Estonian ambassador in London . He was also accredited as ambassador to Ireland from 1994 to 1995 . From April to November 1995 he was a member of the Estonian coalition party ( Eesti Koonderakond ) foreign minister of the Republic of Estonia, 1996 European minister and 1997 interior minister.

In 2002 he was elected President of the Estonian European Movement ( Eesti Euroopa Liikumine ), of which he was a founding member in Estonia.

Businessman

From 1998 to 2001 Sinijärv was director of Firstchase International Ltd., then deputy managing director of AS Eesti Raudtee railway company.
