Trivimi Velliste
Trivimi Velliste (born May 4, 1947 in Tartu ) is an Estonian politician . He was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia from 1992 to 1994. Velliste belongs to the right-wing conservative Fatherland Union ( Isamaaliit ).
After graduating from high school in Tartu in 1965, Trivimi Velliste completed his studies in German and Romance philology at the University of Tartu in 1970 . He then worked as a journalist.
Velliste was one of the masterminds for regaining Estonian independence in Soviet times. In 1987 he founded the Society for the Protection of Estonian Monuments and spoke out in public for human rights and national self-determination. In 1988 he was awarded the Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize.
After Estonian independence was regained, Velliste succeeded Jaan Manitski as Estonian Foreign Minister and from 1994 to 1998 Estonian Ambassador to the United Nations . He was a long-time member of the Estonian Parliament.
Velliste is chairman of the Pro Patria Institute. He is married and has three children.
