Sven Mikser (born November 8, 1973 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician of the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE). He has represented Estonia and his party in the European Parliament since July 2, 2019 . Before that he was chairman of the SDE from 2010 to 2015, Minister of Defense from 2002 to 2003 and 2014 to 2015, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia from 2016 to 2019.

Life

Sven Mikser graduated from high school in Paide in 1992 . In 1996 he completed his studies in English at the University of Tartu . From 1996 to 1999 he worked as an assistant at the Institute for Germanic and Romance Philology at the University of Tartu.

Political activity

In 1998/99 Mikser was political secretary of the Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ). From 1999 to 2002 he was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) for the Center Party . From January 28, 2002 to April 10, 2003, at the age of only 28, Mikser was Estonian Defense Minister in Prime Minister Siim Kallas' cabinet . After the end of the government, Mikser was again a member of the Estonian parliament.

Sven Mikser was a member of the Estonian Center Party from 1995 to 2004. Since May 2005 he has been a member and MP of the Estonian Social Democratic Party. In October 2010 he was elected party leader of the Estonian Social Democrats. Mikser replaced Jüri Pihl , who held the party chairmanship in 2009/2010. In March 2014, Mikser became the new Defense Minister of the Republic of Estonia in the social-liberal coalition government under Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas .

He held the same office in the new government , which took office on April 9, 2015. On September 14, 2015, Sven Mikser left the cabinet as part of a cabinet reshuffle. He returned as a member of the Estonian parliament. His successor as Minister of Defense was Hannes Hanso . When the new coalition government took office under Prime Minister Jüri Ratas on November 23, 2016, Sven Mikser became Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia. In the parliamentary elections in Estonia in 2019 , his party suffered a significant loss of votes and was no longer involved in the next government. Mikser's successor as Foreign Minister was Isamaa politician Urmas Reinsalu in April 2019 .

However, due to the great popularity of its top candidate Marina Kaljurand , the SDE managed to win numerous votes in the 2019 European elections . Mikser, who was second on the list, has been a member of the European Parliament since then . There he is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Security and Defense.

Sven Mikser is single and has a daughter.
