Raul Mälk

Raul Mälk (born May 14, 1952 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian diplomat . He was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia from 1998 to 1999 . Since 2007 he has been the Estonian ambassador to the EU .

First years

Raul Mälk studied business mathematics at the University of Tartu until 1975 . From 1975 to 1977 he was a research associate at the Economic Institute of the Estonian Academy of Sciences . 1983 to 1985 he studied at the Higher Party School of Leningrad . Until 1990 he was a member of the CPSU . Raul Mälk worked in the newsroom at Eesti Raadio in the 1980s . From 1990 he was one of the closest associates of the chairman of the Supreme Council in Estonia, Arnold Rüütel .

diplomacy

After Estonian regained independence, Mälk became a diplomat in the Estonian Foreign Service. In 1992/93 he was assistant to the Estonian Foreign Minister, 1993/94 head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry, 1994-1996 Deputy State Secretary and 1996-1998 Ambassador in London . Raul Mälk was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia from October 1998 to March 1999. From 1999 to 2001 he was again the Estonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom . He then held other high posts in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as head of the planning team. Between 1996 and 2003 Mälk was also the Estonian Ambassador to Ireland .

Raul Mälk is considered to be one of the most influential experts and designers of Estonian foreign policy. He was one of the pioneers in Estonia joining the European Union and NATO and has made a name for himself as a connoisseur of Russia . In numerous publications, radio and television programs, he has made a decisive contribution to forming opinions on foreign policy issues.
