Jüri Pihl (born March 17, 1954 in Kuressaare ; † February 3, 2019 ) was an Estonian politician . He was Minister of Interior of the Republic of Estonia from April 2007 to May 2009.

Life and politics

Jüri Pihl studied law at the University of Tartu from 1977 to 1982 . As early as 1975 he was at the police station of the Estonian SSR busy: from 1975 until 1986 detective inspector from 1986 to 1988 as head of department in Tallinn criminal investigation from 1988 to 1990 as head of the militia of Võru and from 1990 to 1991. Head of the Criminal Investigation from Tallinn.

With restoration of Estonian independence Pihl from 1991 to 1993 Head of the Security Police Department of the Estonian Police Office and from 1993 to 2003 director of the Security Police Department . From 2003 to 2005 he held the post of Attorney General of the Republic of Estonia. From 2005 to 2007 he was State Secretary in the Estonian Ministry of Justice.

From April 2007 to May 2009, Jüri Pihl was the Estonian Minister of the Interior in Prime Minister Andrus Ansip's cabinet . He was a member of the Estonian Social Democratic Party (SDE), and was elected chairman on March 7, 2009. In October 2010, Sven Mikser was elected as his successor as party chairman.

Private life

Jüri Pihl was divorced and had one child.
