Reinhard Mohn at the 1997 Carl Bertelsmann Prize

The Reinhard Mohn Prize (spelling without hyphens) has been awarded by the Bertelsmann Foundation since 2011 . The award recognizes internationally renowned personalities for pioneering solutions to social and political challenges. It commemorates Reinhard Mohn, who died in 2009, and continues the Carl Bertelsmann Prize awarded from 1988 to 2008 .

The winners include the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (2013) and Federal President Joachim Gauck (2018).

history

Award of the Reinhard Mohn Prize 2018 to Joachim Gauck

In 1988 Reinhard Mohn created the Carl Bertelsmann Prize. Mohn was a board member of the Bertelsmann Stiftung and chairman of the Bertelsmann supervisory board . The statutes of the award defined the goal of supporting solutions to socio-political issues in Germany and beyond. International initiatives and projects played an important role in this. Reinhard Mohn explained that the Carl Bertelsmann Prize should "stimulate thought processes and promote the development opportunities of creative people". The prize money was 300,000 marks . In addition, funding for research and model projects was planned from the start.

In the early years, the Carl Bertelsmann Prize was primarily concerned with the relationship between employers and employees in society and in companies. In 1990 the award also dealt with educational policy issues for the first time. In the following years, the Carl Bertelsmann Prize received more and more public attention: for example, the award of the award to the two private English-language television stations Channel 4 and TVW 7 caused a lot of media coverage in 1994. The same applies to the recognition of innovative school systems that the Bertelsmann Foundation found in Canada and Denmark, for example.

Following educational and social issues as well as corporate and economic policy issues, the health sector moved into the focus of the Carl Bertelsmann Prize in 2000 . Again and again, democratic processes were an issue, especially in Eastern Europe and South America. By awarding the award to Transparency International , the Bertelsmann Stiftung set an example in the fight against corruption . Over the years, the Carl Bertelsmann Prize has also received more political attention; Federal Interior Minister Otto Schily (2004), Prime Minister Jürgen Rüttgers (2005) and Federal President Horst Köhler (2006) appeared as laudators .

In 2008 the board of directors of the Bertelsmann Stiftung decided to switch to a two-year cycle. Therefore, the Carl Bertelsmann Prize 2009 was not awarded. After Reinhard Mohn's death in the same year, those responsible renamed the award in his honor. Chancellor Angela Merkel gave the speech at the ceremony for the award of the first Reinhard Mohn Prize in 2011. She praised Reinhard Mohn as “an outstanding entrepreneur in German post-war history”. While private and public institutions have been honored to date, individual individuals have received the award since 2013. The focus of the Reinhard Mohn Prize was initially on civic engagement and direct democracy. Recurring topics included diversity and migration, which the Bertelsmann Foundation had already dealt with in the early 1990s.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic , the award of the Reinhard Mohn Prize 2020 has been postponed to 2021.

organization

The Reinhard Mohn Prize is still a focus of the commitment of Liz Mohn , Deputy Chairwoman of the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation. The board of directors usually appoints a committee of scientists and other experts to decide on the selection of the award winners. The results of the research on the topics of the award are published in the form of studies. The Bertelsmann Foundation also organizes regular symposia to publicly address socio-political issues. The Reinhard Mohn Prize is traditionally presented at the Bertelsmann Foundation's headquarters in Gütersloh .

criticism

The award of the Carl Bertelsmann Prize to two private television broadcasters in 1994 was associated with criticism of the regulations governing the German broadcasting system. For example, Die Tageszeitung saw this as an inadmissible mixture of interests, since the Bertelsmann Group itself has a stake in RTL . Independently of this, the Carl Bertelsmann Prize was used again in 1998 to raise demands for a reorganization of German media supervision. One of the declared goals was "more self-control and user competence".

In 2010, the author and journalist Thomas Schuler addressed the presentation of the Carl Bertelsmann Prize 2002 to Transparency International . He accused the Bertelsmann Foundation of publicly advocating more transparency with this award, but not being sufficiently transparent itself.
