Uno Laht

Uno Laht , pseudonym Onu Thal , (born April 30, 1924 in Valga , † September 24, 2008 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian poet , writer and translator .

Life

Laht went to school in Tallinn and became a member of the Estonian Komsomol in 1940 after the Communists came to power . After the outbreak of the German-Soviet War in 1941, he joined a special militia group, in 1942 he was mobilized into the Soviet Army and wounded in the battle of Velikiye Luki . After his recovery, he briefly studied English in Kazan, but returned to Estonia in 1944.

1944-1946 he participated as a member of a specialty of the Soviet army in the war against the Forest Brothers . After that, however, he left the Soviet security forces and worked as a journalist: 1946–1951 for the newspaper Noorte Hääl ('voice of youth'), 1951–1953 for Rahva Hääl ('voice of the people'). From 1953 he lived as a freelance writer in Tallinn. Uno Laht also translated from Russian and English .

Literary work

Laht began with feature sections in the newspaper and made his debut in 1954 with the volume of poetry Piimahambad ('Milk Teeth '), which was not only conspicuous because it was the only volume of poetry published that year (!), But because the poetry "lively, satirical and unconventional [was] - all properties that had been missing in contemporary Estonian poetry for about 15 years. ”With this, his poetry, published a year after Stalin's death, became a kind of harbinger of the thaw period , which in Estonia a little later with the Poetry by Jaan Kross , Ellen Niit and Ain Kaalep used.

After that, Laht continued to publish poetry and prose, keeping his satirical and slightly socially critical style. With this he sometimes offended, so in 1969 a book with parodies was pulled from the sale by the authorities; however, it could no longer achieve the importance it had in the immediate post-Stalin period. At that time he was, together with Paul Rummo , one of the first to show that one could write in Estonian differently than in the stereotypical style of socialist realism .
