An ice hockey competition was held for the first time at the 29th Southeast Asian Games. The tournament took place from August 20 to 24, 2017 at the Empire City Ice Arena in Damansara Perdana , Malaysia , a suburb of Kuala Lumpur . In addition to the host nation Malaysia, four other nations took part in the competition.

The gold medal was secured by the Philippines , which on the final day beat the Thai who had been leading in the table up to that point . After participating in the Winter Asian Games 2017 , it was only the second participation of the Philippines in a tournament sanctioned by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The hosts Malaysia finished third behind silver medalist Thailand .

A total of 18,593 spectators attended the ten tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,859 per game. The Philippine Paul Sánchez secured the title of top scorer with 14 points .

The five teams played in an all-against-all mode, so that each team played four games. The team that had the most points after all the games won the gold medal.
