Michael Schwartz
Michael Schwartz (* 1963 ) is a German historian .
Life
Schwartz studied history and Catholic religious studies at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (WWU) in Münster from 1982 to 1988 , which he completed with the first state examination for teaching posts at secondary level I and II. From 1983 to 1987 he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation . During the subsequent doctoral studies he was 1989-1992 scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation and in 1993 at the University of Muenster doctorate . There he worked from 1993 to 1994 as a research assistant at the chair for modern and contemporary history at Hans-Ulrich Thamer .
Schwartz has been a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History Munich - Berlin (IfZ) since 1994 . From 1998 to 2001 he was a lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the WWU Münster. In 2001 he completed his habilitation with a study of displaced persons and “resettlement policy” on integration conflicts in German post-war societies at the Department of History / Philosophy at Münster University. Since 2007 he has been an adjunct professor for modern and contemporary history at the Department of History at Münster University.
Schwartz's main research areas include the international comparative history of eugenics and “ euthanasia ”, resistance in the Nazi state, displaced persons policy in the Soviet Zone / GDR, history of social policy in Germany from 1945, history of ethnic “cleansing” in the 19th and 20th centuries and the history of sexuality in Germany from 1965 to 2000.
Between 2014 and 2018, Schwartz was a member of the steering group of the research group on the history of the interior ministries in Bonn and East Berlin - a project jointly operated by the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin and the Center for Contemporary History Research Potsdam.
From 2010 to 2015 Schwartz was a member of the scientific advisory group of the Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation .
He has been a member since 2011 and chairman of the advisory board of the Federal Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation since 2013 .
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Versailles peace treaty, he was a conversation partner on the television program alpha-Demokratie in summer 2019 .
