The Kahneulchen or gray owl ( Nolinae) are a subfamily of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae). This includes around 1400 species worldwide , most of which live in the tropics . This taxon was a long time in the rank of a family in the superfamily Noctuoidea , but was set by Lafontaine and Fibiger (2006) for a revision of the superfamily to subfamily level of Noctuidae.
features
The moths reach in Europe a wingspan of 17 to 23 millimeters and have a medium to strong body. Their forewings are wide and only 1.5 to twice longer than they are wide. The hind wings are about the same width as the fore wings and are broadly rounded. Most of the species in this subfamily are somber in color. Some, such as B. the beech cahne owl ( Pseudoips prasinana ), but stand out because of their bright green color. Their antennae are short to medium in length and are 0.5 to 0.75 times as long as the fore wings. The antennae of the males can be threadlike, combed or feathered. Their maxillary palps are strongly regressed, their proboscis are fully developed. The animals have well-developed tympanic organs on the metathorax , with which some species can generate clicks. The thorax is very hairy.
The forewings have 10 to 12 wing veins with an anal vein (1b). The hind wings have 8 or 9 veins with two anal veins (1a and 1b).
Caterpillars
The caterpillars are usually dense and hairy long. In addition to the pusher , they only have three pairs of abdominal legs , they lack legs on the third abdominal segment. They feed on rose plants (Rosaceae), legumes (Fabaceae) and beech plants (Fagaceae). They pupate in characteristic double-walled and keeled ( boat-shaped ) cocoons .
