The hornbeam small bear ( Nola confusalis ), also known as the gray oak spinner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 16 to 22 millimeters, the moths are one of the smaller species of owl butterfly. The front wings are colored whitish or whitish gray and partly with brown spots. In many specimens, the midfield shimmers particularly brightly and is framed by dark transverse lines. Ring and kidney defects are small and hardly noticeable. On the other hand, some black-brown spots are clearly developed on the front edge. On the white-gray hind wings with long, light-gray fringes, a central spot and the veins stand out dark.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are greenish or brownish in color. They have a broad, yellow back line, which is interrupted on the sixth segment by a brown horizontal line, and small, yellowish warts with dark hair.

Similar species

There is a similarity to the small tree lichen bear ( Nola cicatricalis ), which however has narrower forewings and an overall darker tint. In Nola ronkayorum the dark spots on the front edge are more pronounced. This species, which was only described in 2006, only occurs in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains and some areas of Turkey and there is no geographical overlap with Nola confusalis .

Since the differences in the wing markings in the aforementioned species are small, a reliable determination should be made by a genital morphological analysis.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The hornbeam small bear occurs in large parts of Central Europe. Great Britain and southern Scandinavia are given as the northern border. It is also spread across Asia to Japan. The species prefers to inhabit deciduous forests .

Way of life

The nocturnal moths mainly fly from April to June in one generation per year. They like to visit artificial light sources . Your typical resting position is with your head down. The caterpillars can be found from June to September. They feed on the leaves of various plants, such as:

The species overwinters as a pupa in a web mixed with leaf parts .

Danger

The small hornbeam bear occurs in large numbers in Germany and is listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
