Tympanic organ
The tympanic organ is the acoustic sense organ of numerous insects, which contains scolopidia as receptors , which sit on the inside on a thinned region of the cuticle , the eardrum (tympanum) . The organ is found, for example, in species of grasshoppers and crickets , cicadas , bedbugs and butterflies .
The tympanum is located on an enlarged trachea , so it is bounded by air inside and outside and vibrates when it is hit by sound waves. The vibrations cause excitement in the scolopidia. Tympanic organs are sound pressure gradient receivers ( auditory perception ). They are located in the tibia of the forelegs of grasshoppers and crickets , and in the breast or abdomen segment of field locusts, cicadas and butterflies.
