Scolopidium

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A scolopidium (also scolopidium ) is a sensory cell in arthropods that reacts to mechanosensory stimuli. This sensory cell developed in the course of evolution from the cuticular sensillae and has a characteristic blueprint. The actual mechanoreceptor has been shifted deeper and is only connected to the cuticle via auxiliary cells. The tympanic organ of numerous insects is composed of several scolopidia .
