Michael "Mike" Hedden (born December 27, 1984 in Dunnville , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey striker who has been under contract with the Straubing Tigers of the German Ice Hockey League since the 2015/16 season .
Career
Youth and beginnings in college hockey
Hedden was born in Dunnville , Ontario but grew up and went to school in neighboring St. Catharines . Until he was 20, he played for the Thorold Blackhawks , an amateur team. During a tournament, the coach of the Neumann College ice hockey team observed Hedden and offered him a scholarship to the university. The offensive player accepted the offer and studied business administration and sports management at the college in Pennsylvania for four years . Hedden later stated that without this offer he would have ended his career. At Neumann College, the Canadian played for the Knights in ECAC West , which is incorporated into NCAA III . Hedden won the championship with the Knights in 2009 after defeating Gustavus Adolphus College 4-1 in the final. It was the first title for Neumann College.
Constant increase in performance and win the Calder Cup
After graduating, he was invited to a trial training session by Toledo Walleye from the third class ECHL . Since players from the NCAA III rarely make the leap into professional business in the long term, Hedden had little hope of a contract. Nevertheless, the winger was able to convince the coaching team and signed a one-year contract, which was extended for another season in the following year. He made his professional debut on October 16, 2009 against the Florida Everblades . After a total of two seasons and 50 goals in the ECHL, Hedden played for several teams from the second-rate AHL . Finally, the Texas Stars announced the commitment of the then 26-year-old for the 2011/12 season. In the three years with the Stars , Hedden was able to continuously improve his performance and was instrumental in the Calder Cup triumph in 2014 . Among other things, he was the top scorer in the AHL in the play-offs and scored two goals in the decisive fifth game of the final series against St. John's IceCaps .
Change to Europe
Just a few days after winning the AHL championship, his move to KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the Continental Hockey League became public. However, Hedden could not prevail there and remained pointless in twelve games. Due to a lack of playing time, the contract was terminated at the Canadian's request. Just five days later, Ässät Pori from the Finnish Liiga announced the striker's commitment. In the defensive league, Hedden was able to prove his goal threat again. For the 2015/16 season , the left winger signed a contract with the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League for a year after almost a contract was signed in the previous season.
Style of play
Mike Hedden is considered a strong offensive player who has his strengths in power play. The left shooter has a placed shot and is also a good penalty taker . But its deficits in the defensive game cannot be overlooked. He has been spared serious injuries in his career so far. Jason Dunham , the sports director of the Straubing Tigers says of him: “Mike is a goalscorer. A poisonous player who knows exactly where the goal is and how to score goals. "
