Amityville horror

The Amityville Horror House in December 2005

The Amityville Horror is a 1977 novel by Jay Anson that is set in this location. The book has been filmed several times, including in The Amityville Horror from 1979. Today, the town is known worldwide precisely because of these horror films.

The novella is based on a true story in November 1974 in which Ronald DeFeo shot and killed six family members in the family home - the house is at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville. In December 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their three children into the house, but they fled 28 days later, telling them that they were being followed by paranormal phenomena. Jay Anson was inspired by this portrayal and made the horror story famous. The house in question still exists today, but it was rebuilt and the address was changed to discourage tourists from stopping - subsequent residents are unaware of any phenomena and consider the portrayal of the Lutz family to be a financially profitable hoax.

Local public transport

There is a station in town on the Montauk Branch line of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which provides a rapid transit connection to New York City . From 1909 to 1919 the Huntington – Amityville tram crossed the place and from 1910 to 1920 a line of the Babylon tram drove to Amityville. Today the place is served by several bus routes from Suffolk County Transit and Nassau Inter-County Express .
