WS-Discovery is a standard from the context of the WS- * specifications that deals with the discovery of web services. The basic principle of the specification is that a request is sent to a service group and each suitable among the target services replies directly to the requester. In order to avoid unnecessary traffic, it is further specified that every service that wants to be found must register , similar to UDDI , or log off when going offline.

WS-Discovery aims explicitly at the modularity of the WS- * - specifications by including important aspects such as encryption / signature ( WS-Security ), secure message transmission ( WS-Reliable Messaging ), permanent addressing ( WS-Addressing ) or transactions ( WS-Transaction ) are "left" to the specified specifications.
