Plant in the city of Togliatti

The Russian joint-stock company GM - AvtoVAZ ( Russian ЗАО Джи Эм-АВТОВАЗ / SAO Dschi Em-Avtowas ) is a Russian automobile manufacturer that has existed since 2001 and builds vehicles under the brand name of the Chevrolet Motor Division. However, since these models are not available from normal Chevrolet dealers, the product names are prefixed with the official manufacturer name and are also an integral part of this. The factory uses the manufacturer code X9L in the vehicle identification number .

history

The company GM-AvtoVAZ was founded on June 27, 2001 as a cooperation between Chevrolet and AO AvtoVAZ. The company's aim should be to mass-produce the new generation of the Niva. This was AO AvtoVAZ (also known as Lada ) have failed so far. Chevrolet, which in 1999 and 2000 tried to realize the Niva via rebadging under its own brand, also failed. In order to tackle the existing problems more efficiently, they were ultimately forced to set up a joint venture .

CJSC GM-AvtoVAZ (Russian: ЗАО Джи Эм-АВТОВАЗ, transcription: GM-AWTOWAS) was founded on July 30, 2001 as a joint venture between the GM subsidiary Chevrolet Motor Division, United States of America , the Russian AO AvtoVAZ , Russian Federation and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (European Union). The company is a Russian stock corporation in the legal form CJSC (Sakrytoje Akzionernoje Obschtschestwo / Закрытое Акционерное Общество) and thus has a status comparable to a GmbH. However, it is considered a closed stock corporation, also known as Closed Joint Stock Company, from which the legal form is ultimately derived.

The company's first employees were hired in August 2001. Work had started in October. As planned, the company's first product was the Niva. The joint venture company is currently producing on four production lines in Togliatti and is hoping to be able to sell the Niva through additional production facilities in the future. The first additional markets are to be Eastern Europe from 2010 and then Western Europe. It is still unclear whether the model will then roll off the production line as a Lada or a Chevrolet.

In January 2006, AvtoVAZ CEO Boris Aljoschin took over the majority of shares in GM-AvtoVAZ through the armaments company FGUP Rosoboronexport . In the spring of 2009, the plant stopped all production for several weeks. The cause for this was the global economic crisis, which caused the sales figures of almost all automobile manufacturers to drop dramatically. In the end, the Russian-American joint venture was also affected. The operation is currently under full state control and is considered state property by Boris Alyoshin . General Motors, on the other hand, insists on its share, as the units produced by GM-AvtoVAZ account for a market share of around 70 percent of the GM model range within the Russian Federation. The production shutdown cost the company $ 8 million a week. Since more cars were sold in Russia than in the People's Republic of China and India combined, this was a momentous event for the company. Due to many government opponents who claim that too much money is being spent on nonsensical and useless state projects, GM-AvtoVAZ resumed production under pressure. On December 1, 2009, Jeffrey Glover became GM's second American (after Richard Swando ) General Manager of GM-AvtoVAZ, replacing John Hanson , who had held this post since February 2007. In December 2019 it was announced that AvtoVAZ would acquire the 50 percent stake from GM and that GM would withdraw completely from the Russian market.

Chevrolet Niva Facelift from 2009

The Chevrolet Niva has been manufactured at GM-AvtoVAZ since September 2002, planned by AvtoVAZ as the successor to the Lada Niva , which is still being built at AvtoVAZ in parallel. The prototype was presented as early as 1998 and efforts have been made to mass-produce this model since 1997. Due to financial problems, poor quality and a lack of equipment options, production as the Lada Niva 2123 was only successful in small series between 1998 and 2002. With the joint venture, GM-AutoVaz took over the vehicle and now produced the Chevrolet Niva, which became the most popular car in 2004 and 2005. In September 2009, the Chevrolet Niva received a major makeover and a new look for the model year. The exterior has been adapted to modern stylistic elements and the interior has also been completely revised and adapted to Western standards. The engines, however, remained unchanged. Distribution to Europe of the new level would therefore be conceivable, but due to the demand from the CIS countries, this will not be possible. We are considering plans to have the current face- lifted version also produced in Ukraine by AvtoZAZ for the Eastern European market. If necessary, a small number could be exported to Western Europe. But South America is also already open as a possible sales destination, where Lada has its own dealer network. With a closer cooperation between Chevrolet and AvtoVAZ, it is hoped to be able to increase sales accordingly and to finally consolidate the joint venture, as was the case with Daewoo Motor . In 2009, after the facelift, the Chevrolet Niva was named SUV of the Year .
