history

Rosoboronexport is the legal successor to the state arms exporters of the former USSR and Russia. On May 8, 1953, an arms trade agency was established within the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Trade. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , two companies exported weapons in the 1990s: Roswooruschenije and Promexport . By a decree of the Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin on November 4, 2000, Rosoboronexport was designated as the only company for import and export in this area.

On 4 August 2006, the government imposed by US President George W. Bush an embargo against Rosoboronexport, for selling materials to build weapons of mass destruction to Iran . Rosoboronexport was banned from doing business with the US government for two years. A company spokesman said the embargo was a retaliation for Russia's decision to ship US $ 3 billion in weapons and equipment to Venezuela. He also said that it would also cause considerable damage to US corporations and that this could not be interpreted as an "embargo" because the USA has no influence whatsoever on Russian companies. The exporter delivered a total of 10 billion dollars worth of arms to Latin America by 2017.

The status of the embargo imposed by the United States Department is unclear after the US Department of Defense procured 22 Mi-17 CT transport and attack helicopters. The company ARINC was commissioned with the procurement and delivery of the machines . The latter bought at least some of the helicopters in the UUAZ (Ulan-Ude-Flugzeugwerk). The majority owner of UUAZ, Oboronprom Holding, in turn is owned by over 30% Rosoboronexport. The Mi-17 are destined for the Iraqi armed forces.
