Lists on the subject

The AEK-971 ( A wtomat E ksperimentalny K okscharowa) is a Soviet assault rifle with a caliber of 5.45 × 39 mm . It was developed and produced in the Kovrov arms factory " WA Degtjarjow " in order to meet the requirements set by the Soviet government in the context of the Abakan project ; A high rate of fire and a stable hit pattern were particularly emphasized, even in an unstable position.

development

The rifle was designed by Stanislaw Ivanovich Koksharow in the late 1980s. Although it failed to meet the requirements of the Abakan project, development and production continued in the hopes of finding buyers.

In the early 2000s, MWD procured some 5.45 × 39 mm AEK-971s , but production ceased in 2006.

description

The AEK-971 is a gas pressure charger with a rotary head lock . Despite the external similarity to the well-known Kalashnikov assault rifles, the mechanics of the weapon are fundamentally different from them. In order to meet the requirements for low recoil , the weapon has two counter-rotating gas pistons that are coupled to one another. The second gas piston moves a counterweight, which compensates for three of the four moments of the bolt return movement. This not only reduces the recoil, but also lets the weapon lie more quietly, which means that a much narrower hit pattern is possible with continuous fire than with conventionally constructed automatic weapons. The AEK-971 is said to be 15–20% more precise than the AK-74 in sustained fire .

The magazines are compatible with those of the AK-47 and AK-74.

The fire selection and safety lever on both sides can be easily reached with the thumb. Single and continuous fire as well as 3-shot bursts are available as fire modes .

Testing

The weapon took part in the abakan tests in the 1980s, which it failed. However, for various reasons none of the other test weapons submitted was selected as the army's new standard armament, but a modified version of the AK-74 that had already been introduced, the AK-74M.

When the question of a new standard assault rifle was raised again in the 2010s, the Degtjarjowwerk submitted improved models of the AEK-971 (A-545, GRAU index 6P67 and A-762, GRAU index 6P68) to the Ratnik tests . These have u. a. via improved ergonomics, a reinforced cover with a rear- facing rear sight and mounting rails to which various aiming aids can be attached. In December 2014, it was announced that both weapons, as well as the AK-12 , had passed the tests.
