The Kamow Ka-31 ( Russian Камов Ка-31 , NATO code name : Helix ) is a helicopter in service with the Russian Navy . It is a model produced in just a few copies that was specially developed for radar reconnaissance.

development

Work began in 1985 as the Ka-25PLD or Ka-29RLD, and the project was defended the following year. The Ka-31 is based on the tried and tested Kamow Ka-27 , with which it shares the essential technical parameters. The special feature of the helicopter is its six meter long radar shield, which is attached below the fuselage. It is part of the E-801 radar system constructed at the Scientific Research Institute for Radiotechnology in Gorki , which was first tested in 1987 with a Ka-27. In normal flight mode the shield lies flat against the fuselage, in reconnaissance mode it is folded down and rotates at six revolutions per minute under the helicopter. The landing gear is retracted for this; the cruising speed drops to 100 km / h. The range for the detection of flying objects the size of a combat aircraft is up to 150 km, for surface vessels up to 200 km. A total of forty targets can be tracked at the same time.
